Rehearsal Notes

Jan 18

Beneath the Canopy

  • Tongued 8th notes should be short.

Fields of Clover

  • Almost always play louder than the music tells you. Play confidently, don’t worry about being too loud.

  • Connect the notes, even when they’re tongued.

Jan 11

In general, 1) practice with a tuner, and 2) listen to and practice with the recordings

Waltz

  • We have to continue to listen to the melody when we play and always be able to react to it

  • It helps if you do something physical on beat one, like nodding your head. Try it out.

  • We need to focus on the fermata in m. 95—there is a first fermata and then a second fermata on beat 3.

Beneath the Canopy

  • Dynamics are good. Can we make them even stronger

  • Remember the freeze in the end

  • Remember to bring it down to piano after forte for those of you who have the half notes.

Fields of Clover

  • Keep the phrasing happening

  • Listen to the recording. (see above)

  • Watch out for the key change at m. 42

Dec 14

Waltz

  • m. 94: Add a Fermata on beat 1 and 3

Beneath the Canopy

  • Repeated 8th notes should be short, clear, and we should NOT slow down

  • If your part is difficult to play because of the slurs, practice all tongued and put in the slurs later

  • If you have the melody, always play it louder

  • Try to practice with the recording (see above).

Fields of Clover

  • Listen to the recording (see above).

  • m. 42: Watch out for the key change.

Dec 7

Waltz

  • Part 1 and 2, practice m. 156–end, make the 2 slurs very clear

  • m. 5: Part 2 can be very loud

  • Any time you have an accidental, it can be louder than expected.

Beneath the Canopy

  • Repeated 8th notes should be short, clear, and should NOT slow down

  • If your part is difficult to play because of the slurs, practice all tongued and put in the slurs later

  • If you have the melody, always play it louder

  • Part 1, practice m. 77–end (start slow, play without slurs if needed)

  • Practice with the recording (see above)

Nov 23

Waltz

  • Melody: Play it a little dramatic, romantic and louder

  • m. 21: Even though it’s slurred, make it precise and accurate

  • Short notes should be short but with a tone

To a Wild Rose

  • Even though it’s quiet and fragile, play with good sound.

Underneath the Canopy

  • If you have the melody, play it loud. If you support, play it quiet.

  • The forte-piano – make a big deal out of it

  • Try to practice with a recording.
