2024–25 Audition Packets & requirements

Audition components

MYS auditions consist of the following components:

  1. Solo

  2. Scales

  3. Excerpt

  4. Sightreading

Which orchestra should I audition for?

MYS has three full orchestras—Philharmonic, Repertory, and Symphony—made up of strings, woodwinds, brass, and percussion. String Orchestra is strings only and Wind Orchestra is woodwinds and brass only. Visit our Orchestras Page to learn more about the levels of each orchestra and watch video clips.

Review the audition packet for your instrument (see below) to determine which orchestra’s audition requirements best match your playing level. Note: regardless of which orchestra’s audition material you prepare, the conductor who hears your audition will place you in the orchestra best suited to your abilities and the needs of the ensemble. Orchestra placement can be competitive based on the number of other individuals auditioning.

To prepare for your audition, please download the audition packet for your instrument. If you have any questions about audition requirements, please contact the MYS office at 651-699-5811, or email Melissa Morey, MYS Operations Manager.
